I met Jeremy Blake in 2003 at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. I was a lowly intern working his exhibition opening night....but I will never forget it. He had a striking presence and was with an incredibly beautiful woman. Despite working at the MCASD, I do not like contemporary art (shhhh!). His was and still is the only work I fell in love with while there. The colors are brilliant and there is a dreamy quality to it. The work above is the multiple covers Blake did for Beck's Sea Change album. The album's release conincided with the exhibition at MCASD. Ironically, I was never a Beck fan and bought the album because of the cover art. If you have not listened, it is in my opinion one of the greatest albums of all time. Very different from Beck's other albums. It goes without saying that I always think of Blake when listening to Sea Change (which is often). I was shocked and saddened to open up a Vanity Fair in 2008 to read that Blake and the beautiful woman, Theresa Duncan, had committed suicide. His work inspired me and their deaths were tragic, mysterious and intensly romantic.
